DLN Success Story – Alabama Patient Can Eat and Smile Again

Lenora and Dr. James Joy

Lenora, 50, lives alone in northern Alabama and has multiple health challenges. She suffers from extensive orthopedic and heart problems as well as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Before being placed on permanent disability, Lenora worked for many years in customer service and as a child care worker while raising her three children.

Sadly, the GERD impacted Lenora’s dental health. Many of her teeth became decayed and broken and she was in constant pain. Her physician urged her to address these issues as quickly as possible before they impacted her overall health. Lenora survives on a small Social Security benefit and food stamps and receives housing assistance. Unfortunately, she could not afford the dental treatment she needed. It seemed she had nowhere to turn for help.

How DDS Helped
Lenora learned of the Donated Dental Services (DDS) program and was linked with three generous volunteers:

  • Dr. James Joy performed multiple extractions and restorations and donated a root canal, a crown, a full upper denture and a partial lower denture.
  • Dental Prosthetics fabricated the dentures at no cost.
  • Space City Dental Lab donated the crown.

“Thank you so much for helping me get my smile back. I have suffered twenty years with dental pain. The staff and Dr. J. were wonderful.” –Lenora, DDS Patient

“Lenora is a nice person and it was very rewarding for our entire office to be able to help her regain confidence and to smile again.” –Dr. James Joy, DDS Volunteer
