DLN Doubles Capacity to Provide Dental Care in Colorado

Nonprofit Doubles Capacity to Provide Dental Care in Colorado

Dental Lifeline Network, a national nonprofit based in Denver, acquires second van to deliver comprehensive dental care to seniors and the medically fragile in Colorado

DENVER, Colo. (Aug. 10, 2016) – Dental Lifeline Network will double its capacity to provide care to those in need in Denver and surrounding areas through its Dental HouseCalls Van program thanks to a donation from Delta Dental of Colorado.

Thousands of people in Colorado have disabilities or are elderly or medically fragile, and they cannot afford dental care. Because Medicare does not cover dental treatment and Colorado Medicaid provides limited dental care for adults, Dental Lifeline Network (DLN) often is the last resort. Since 1974 DLN has served more than 31,000 Denver-area residents through programs that support those in need of dental care and who have nowhere else to turn.

Delta Dental of Colorado is making it possible for DLN to double its capacity to serve the Denver metro area by granting $30,000 to buy a second Dental HouseCalls van.

“This second Dental HouseCalls van will double the amount of patients and impact we can have across the Denver metro area bringing comprehensive oral health to those most in need,” said Fred Leviton, President of Dental Lifeline Network. “We also will look to expand into areas outside of Denver, which is exciting for the community we serve.”

The van will be on display Thursday, August 11 from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Kavod Senior Center (22 S Adams St, Denver, CO 80209). Media are invited to interview leaders, dentists and patients as DLN provides care to residents.

DLN is one of the only organizations of its kind in Colorado, delivering comprehensive care to people inside their homes or care facilities. Through various grants, as well as Medicaid reimbursements, DLN is able to help fund comprehensive dental care ranging from minor check-ups to major restorations.

Last year, DLN provided almost $600,000 in care to about 1,000 seniors (patients are often seen more than once in a calendar year). Demand has picked up in recent years, and the organization’s current van is out in the field helping dentists deliver care 70 hours per week.

The additional resources come at an opportune time, Leviton said, as Colorado in 2014 added an adult dental benefit to all of its Medicaid plans, one of the few states to do this. This means adults on Medicaid now have coverage for dental care, something only children had before through the Child Health Plans Plus (CHP+) program.

”The addition of a second van addresses the big need for dental services to be delivered to those who cannot get out to see a dentist for various reasons such as health or transportation challenges. The second van will help vulnerable people who have a tough time accessing treatment immensely in meeting that demand,” said Leviton.

Delta Dental of Colorado donated funds to purchase a van in 2008 that still operates.

“At Delta Dental we believe in ‘smile power,’ the idea that a healthy smile can improve a person’s life in powerful ways,” said Barbara Springer, vice president and general counsel of Delta Dental of Colorado who also serves as executive director of the company’s foundation. “For more than 40 years Dental Lifeline Network has delivered smile power to tens of thousands of seniors in Colorado, and we are thrilled to support them in doing even more.”
