Illinois HouseCalls provides equipment to dental students to treat patients at Misericordia

Students from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry recently treated patients at Misericordia on September 9, 2014. Misericordia is a community of care that maximizes potential for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities. The group of 2students were led by Dr. Robert Rada (pictured third from right), a Dental Lifeline Network • Illinois board member, and Boris Trukman, Dental HouseCalls Coordinator.  Dental Lifeline Network• Illinois and the Dental HouseCalls program provided the portable equipment used to treat patients.

Students treated twelve individuals with disabilities and provided periodontal and restorative treatment, and oral surgery procedures. Approximately $2,655 in dental care was provided.  The students were able to gain valuable insight into the special accommodations necessary to work with individuals with developmental disabilities.  Additionally, students learned about challenges in working with portable equipment outside of the dental office.
