DDS Volunteers Restore California Woman’s Dental Health

The CA DDS program helps patients like Judy, 70, who lives in San Diego. A survivor of a heart transplant in 2003, Judith also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and mental health challenges. Unfortunately, her dental health presented another challenge, as many fillings had fallen out and two bridges that had previously been installed were broken. Judy, however, was unable to afford the treatment she needed to address her deteriorating dental health. Surviving on a Social Security benefit that goes entirely toward her monthly living expenses, she struggled to make ends meet.

Thankfully, a team of DDS volunteers were able to help. Dr. Pamela Macpherson, a general dentist and DDS volunteer since 2016, evaluated Judy’s condition and determined that her bite was collapsing. Next, an oral surgeon extracted 15 teeth and did a bone graft. Then, a prosthodontist, with help from a volunteer laboratory, donated a full upper denture and partial lower denture. Thanks to this caring team, Judy received thousands of dollars-worth of life-changing treatment, restoring her oral health and her smile.
