Jameshia’s Story
“This would change my life.” At just 38 years old, Jameshia, a Florida resident, has been battling breast cancer for years. Since 2023, she has gone through chemotherapy, radiation, mastectomy, and lymph node removal, and is still undergoing treatment at the Moffitt Cancer Center. Sadly, her declining oral health became another challenge until Dental Lifeline Network • Florida’s Donated Dental Services (DDS) program came to help.
Before being diagnosed with cancer, Jameshia worked as a security guard. After her diagnosis, she was unable to work and not eligible to receive disability benefits. The cost of cancer treatment was so high that she had to live out of her car for a period of time to make ends meet.
On top of this, Jameshia’s cancer treatments negatively impacted her oral health. She only had 18 teeth left in her mouth, which were infected, leaving her in severe pain and caused her difficulty eating. She would need a full mouth extraction, but the mounting medical bills made affording the necessary dental treatment seem impossible. Jameshia was at severe risk of sepsis and was left terrified and wondering if she would get the dental care she needed.
DDS Volunteers Step in to Help
When all hope seemed lost, Jameshia was referred to the DDS program by the Moffitt Cancer Center, and a group of incredible DDS volunteers stepped in to help! Dr. Stephanie Mazariegos, Dr. Reza Iranmanesh, and Dr. James Green worked together with Jerry’s Dental Lab to treat Jameshia, who received the necessary extractions, a permanent upper denture, and a lower partial denture. Thanks to this group of DDS volunteers, Jameshia received thousands of dollars of treatment that restored her smile and oral health, just in time for her birthday!
“Thank you so much. I am so grateful for this program and now I’m able to smile again!” shared Jameshia.
