Thomas’s Story
Of the more than 9 million veterans who are eligible for medical care through the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), 85% are not eligible for dental coverage or care, according to CareQuest Institute for Oral Health. This was the case for Thomas, 68, a U.S. Navy Veteran who lives in Denver.
Thomas spent three years serving in the U.S. Navy as a boatswain’s mate. He worked on the deck unwrapping, painting, and chipping paint. In the years following his service, Thomas became a mechanic, even opening up his own garage and giving senior citizens and those living with disabilities discounted services.
Sadly, Thomas injured his neck, making him unable to work, and he became homeless. On top of that, his oral health began to severely decline. Thomas suffered from cavities and chipped teeth, leaving him in pain and unable to chew, and even had an infection that almost cost him his life.
Thankfully, this all changed when he found Dental Lifeline Network’s Donated Dental Services (DDS) program and DDS volunteers stepped in to help. Thomas had his infected teeth pulled and was then given upper and lower dentures. Thanks to the generosity of these DDS volunteers, Thomas’s oral health was restored!
“It was basically like Christmas time,” shared Thomas. “I was smiling everywhere!”
Now, Thomas is living pain-free, has renewed confidence, and can cook and eat his favorite foods.
