Veteran’s Oral Health Restored Through the DDS Program

DDS Volunteer Dr. Scott Wagnild with DDS Patient Richard

Lifechanging stories like Richard’s are only possible thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters and partners. A special thank you to Guardian for your continued partnership and for helping us bring vital care to those who need it most.

For many veterans who have served our country, access to comprehensive oral healthcare remains out of reach. Dental Lifeline Network’s Donated Dental Services (DDS) program steps in to bridge this gap, changing the lives of veterans like Richard.

Richard’s Story

A devoted husband and father, Richard worked for and eventually retired from a local lumber store. Now navigating the challenges of high blood pressure and experiencing Alzheimer’s disease, Richard relies heavily on his family for his day to day care.

Sadly, he was facing widespread dental decay and multiple painful cavities. One tooth was exposed because of a lost crown, and he had not been to a dentist in more than 15 years because of the cost. Surviving solely on a fixed income from him and his wife’s SSIs, every dollar was used for basic living expenses. He could not afford the dental treatment he desperately needed – leaving him feeling hopeless and in pain.

DDS Volunteers Make a Difference

Thankfully, this all changed when Richard’s daughter, Rachel, discovered the DDS program. When Richard came to the program, DDS volunteers immediately stepped in to help. Volunteer dentist Dr. Scott Wagnild generously gave his time and expertise to provide multiple restorations and worked with a volunteer lab, Dandy, to provide an upper partial denture to replace Richard’s missing teeth. Thanks to these volunteers, Richard received thousands of dollars in donated treatment that restored his oral health and allowed him to live pain-free for the first time in years! He can now eat comfortably, live without pain, and smile proudly alongside his family.

“We are super happy with the results for my dad,” shared Rachel, Richard’s daughter. “This was truly an amazing, lifechanging experience for him.”
