Volunteer Spotlight: Dr. Caroline Truong of Jolie Smiles

Our Donated Dental Services (DDS) program consists of generous volunteers who donate their services to help people receive comprehensive dental care that they otherwise could not afford. One volunteer who was recently able to make a great impact on the life of someone in need is Dr. Caroline Truong of Jolie Smiles. Dr. Truong has been a DDS volunteer for three years and, during her time as a volunteer, she has been able to work with some special patients, like Sandy.

A 64 year old Army veteran, breast and melanoma cancer survivor, Sandy has faced many health challenges such as endometriosis (a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus). In addition to her many health issues, Sandy’s dental health was another concern. Many of her teeth were missing and the ones that remained were in poor condition and caused her pain while eating. Unable to afford the treatment necessary to restore her dental health, Sandy felt as though she was out of options.

Fortunately, Dr. Truong was able to take on Sandy’s case as a part of the DDS program. She teamed up with volunteer dental labs and provided Sandy with dental care that changed her life for the better.

“Because of you [DDS program] my life changed,” said Sandy. “I have something to smile about. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

We are incredibly grateful for Dr. Truong and her dedication to providing life-changing dental care to those in need. The DDS program is currently in need of more dentists to see at least one patient a year in their own office.
